This is one of the best of the G. A. Henty booksG. A. Henty was a prolific 19th Century writer, directing his work towards young men. His heroes are generally teenagers who combine humility with great courage, integrity and intelligence. They are, of course, just TOO perfect. Some criticize this, saying that the standards thus set are too high to be achieved. These critics (speaking of current times when all heroes, it seems, are to be degraded) forget that Henty intended to set high standards - not to be achieved necessarily but to be striven for. His books, I believe, help guide young men to become good men.
In this book, the young orphan hero is sent to Gibraltar to live for two years with his sister, who happens to be married to an Irish officer. Soon after his arrival Gibraltar undergoes a two-plus year siege by the French and Spanish. Unlike some Henty books where the heroic adventures are rather unbelievable, the tales told here seem to be likely. Woven as it is around true facts and adventures, the book flows well and is hard to set aside.
I have had the pleasure to travel to many of the places mentioned in Henty's books. I am always surprised at the accuracy of his geography and topography. "Held Fast for England" is no exception. His descriptions of Tangiers, Gibraltar and the Spanish Coast (as well as the peculiarities of the currents in the Straights) are spot on.
This is a great book for an adult who wants to relive his own teenage years as he wished they had been, but also for young men who want to learn what true gentlemanly heroism should be like.

Where else can a reader learn about increasingly forgotten moments of history? All I know about Gibraltar is told in this story. What a great period piece.
Good history as I expect from Henty. Looking forward to reading more. Thank you for the work that has gone into the volumes.
My dad used to buy me GA Henty novels from the used book store and I am pleased to say (40 plus years later) the stories still stand up. The language reflects common usage at the time and may be a bit stilted-sounding today, but the tales are entertaining enough and celebrate virtues of initiative, courage and endurance.
The free versions lack the classic illustrations of the original hardcover but you can't knock the entertainment value per dollar.
Read this short lit piece before heading to Gibraltar. Gave me a real sense of the history of the place, from both a day and a NIGHT time perspective.
Forget Clive. Forget Nelson. It's always a young lad, at crucial moments, tilting history in favor of Britannia. Nevertheless, you can see why this series must have been the equivalent of The Hardy Boys, way back when. Always an enjoyable and fast paced read, equally interesting for the history it presents.
I love the way Henry works in all the details of the naval and land battles associated with the action. This was happening at the same time as the American Revolution
This book, written in 1892, is one of long series of historical fiction books by Henty. The hero is a boy in his late teens. The stories interweave some sections which are almost dry history, telling about the actual placements of batteries and gunboats, etc., with exciting adventures of the hero. This book is especially interesting to an American like me, for this important military siege is never mentioned in an American history class. Also, an important part of the book covers the role that privateers on both sides played in 18th century naval campaigns. The author lionizes people willing to ignore many rules (like curfews), but the worst sin to him is lying. This is a great book to both learn history and have a good time.
